By the end of the year, over 35,000 trays used in McDonald's restaurants in Romania will be replaced with AION’s serving trays made of 100% recycled marine plastic, marking a regional first initiative.
McDonald's Romania introduces AION's 100 % recycled serving trays
As a first mover in Romania and the Eastern Europe region, McDonald’s Romania is introducing AION’s 100% recycled and recyclable plastic trays in all its restaurants during 2023. The new trays mark the transition to a sustainable and circular production system, supporting McDonald's commitment to reduce the amount of plastic used in restaurants and reduce its carbon footprint.
Parallell to AION’s circular trays, McDonald's Romania is also introducing a special type of recycled tray liners that are used in restaurants. These initiatives bring McDonald’s Romania closer to achieving the corporate goal that by 2025, 100% of the packaging used by McDonald's will come from renewable, recycled, or certified sources.
For McDonald's, sustainable development is a responsibility we have for the communities we are part of. That's why we constantly invest and look for solutions to help protect the environment. By introducing the new 100% sustainable trays, we will be able to further reduce the amount of plastic we use in McDonald's restaurants. Furthermore, the transition to a circular system is an important and necessary step. We want to be a true ally for a positive, long-term change.

With these circular trays, we launch a tangible solution that will help reduce plastic pollution, waste and CO2 emissions - as a first McDonald's market outside of the Nordic countries.
